This is Comcast's gateway. It is both a modem and a wireless router. It's sufficient for most homes. Mediacom's and Centurylink's gateways are weaker but still sufficient for most homes.

You can add a 3rd-party (Netgear, Google, Linksys) mesh system if a) your gateway device isn't up to the task or b) you are only using a modem. Typical cost is $300+.

If you have a section of your house that has bad WiFi signal, you can use a WiFi 'extender.' These will work with any gateway device. Anything less than $80 could be a waste.
Plan to download an app to your phone to manage your wireless gateway or mesh network.
Some WiFi devices don't 'like' some houses. Swapping brands can solve this.
Just as with computers, phones, and tablets, a reboot fixes a lot of problems. You can preemptively power cycle your network equipment monthly to improve performance.
